Which McDug adult dog food is right for my dog?

Every dug is different. That's why we don't believe there is one recipe that's automatically right for every dog.

Simply Good

Good, honest nutrition at a sensible price. Our Simply Good recipes combine quality animal protein with carefully selected ingredients such as rice or potato and are a great everyday choice for adult dogs.

A good place to start if: you're looking for complete, straightforward everyday nutrition and excellent value.

Nourish Grain Free

Our Nourish recipes are made with freshly prepared meat or fish and are completely grain-free. There's a wide choice of flavours as well as recipes for different breed sizes and life stages.

The ingredients are gently cooked using Freshtrusion® technology, helping protect their nutritional quality while creating a tasty, highly digestible kibble.

A good place to start if: you'd prefer a grain-free recipe or simply want to give your dug a choice of high-quality meat and fish recipes.

Nourish Plus

Nourish Plus takes things up another level, with recipes containing 65% of the named animal protein source, combined with a carefully selected blend of superfood vegetables and plant ingredients chosen for their nutritional benefits.

It's our premium everyday range for owners looking for a high proportion of quality meat or fish alongside thoughtfully selected ingredients and complete adult nutrition.

A good place to start if: a high proportion of animal protein, quality ingredients and the added nutritional benefits of superfood vegetables are high on your shopping list.

Health & Wellness

Sometimes a dug needs more than everyday nutrition.

Our Health & Wellness recipes have been developed for dogs with particular nutritional needs, including sensitive digestion, skin and coat support, and weight and joint management.

Selected recipes use hydrolysed protein peptides produced using Freshtrusion® HDP technology, designed to make high-quality protein easier for the body to use.

A good place to start if: your dug has a particular nutritional need and you want a more targeted recipe.

Grain-free or grain-inclusive dog food?

There's no single answer that's right for every dog.

Some dogs thrive on recipes containing carefully selected grains such as rice, while other owners prefer a grain-free diet using alternatives such as sweet potato.

Rather than assuming one is automatically better, we'd recommend choosing according to your dog's individual needs, how well they digest their current food, their lifestyle and the quality of the complete recipe.

That's one reason McDug offers both.

Changing your dog's food

When introducing a new dog food, it's normally best to make the change gradually rather than swapping the bowl overnight.

Mix an increasing amount of the new food with your dog's existing food over several days, while reducing the old food. Keep an eye on their digestion, appetite and, of course, their poo — your dug can tell you quite a lot about how they're getting on!

How much should I feed my adult dog?

The right amount depends on more than the number on the scales.

Your dog's weight, breed, age, activity level, body condition and individual metabolism can all affect how much food they need.

Use the feeding guide on your chosen McDug recipe as your starting point, then monitor your dog's body condition and adjust where necessary.

If the waistline has started disappearing and your dug is carrying a little too much timber, reducing portions and choosing an appropriate weight-management recipe may help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is complete adult dog food?

A complete dog food is formulated to provide the nutrients an adult dog requires when fed according to its feeding instructions. You don't need to add other foods to make the diet nutritionally complete.

When should my puppy move onto adult dog food?

It depends partly on breed size. Smaller breeds generally reach maturity sooner than large and giant breeds. Check the guidance for your chosen puppy recipe rather than changing simply because your puppy has reached a particular birthday.

Is grain-free dog food better for dogs?

Not necessarily. Grain-free food can be an appropriate choice for some dogs, but the absence of grain alone doesn't make a food better. The overall quality and nutritional balance of the recipe — and how well your own dog does on it — are more important.

What should I do if my dog has a sensitive stomach?

Start by looking at the whole picture, including treats, portion size and recent dietary changes. For dogs needing more targeted nutritional support, explore our Health & Wellness Digestive Care range.

Persistent or significant digestive problems should always be discussed with your vet.

Can I try McDug before buying a large bag?

Yes. Where available, our smaller bags and trial options are a useful way to introduce your dug to McDug before moving onto a larger bag.

Not sure what to choose?

With lots of recipes available, choosing dog food can sometimes become more complicated than it needs to be.

Start with your dug: their age, size, activity, body condition and any particular nutritional needs. Then choose the McDug range and recipe that fits them best.

And if you're still scratching your head, ask Rab at McDug. We're an independent Scottish business, and we're always happy to help you find the right bowl for your dug.
