Why Values Matter: The McDug Commitment to Ethical and Sustainable Dog Food
Posted by ROBERT MACLEOD on
At McDug Nutrition, we believe that how something is made is just as important as what goes into it. Our promise to provide the best food for dogs isnât just about ingredients â itâs about the integrity of the entire process. Thatâs why weâve chosen a manufacturing partner whose values align closely with ours, especially when it comes to animal welfare, sustainability, and environmental responsibility.
đ Sustainability: Not Just a Buzzword
As a small independent business, we donât have a marketing team pushing buzzwords â we have a real responsibility to do the right thing. That means making conscious choices about who we work with, how our food is made, and what kind of impact that has on the planet.
From day one, weâve worked with a British farming and manufacturing partner who shares our belief that sustainability isnât optional â itâs essential. Theyâre making long-term investments in renewable energy, waste reduction, and lower-emission transport solutions.
đ Powered by Green Energy
Our partner's facility is powered in part by renewable electricity, helping reduce the carbon footprint of every single McDug meal. The site also uses cutting-edge energy recovery systems that convert waste heat into usable power â a small detail that makes a big difference over time. We have big plans for the plant to be 100% renewable we just need to get the windmill passed planning then we will not only be 100% green energy but able to supply free electric to our neighbours.
đ Smarter Logistics
Food doesnât just appear in a bowl â it has to travel. And transport is one of the biggest sources of emissions in any food business. Thatâs why weâve prioritised partners who have invested in low-emission delivery vehicles and who plan routes to minimise environmental impact.
Even our own McDug van (you might spot it around Glasgow!) is part of our ongoing effort to reduce unnecessary miles and bring your dog's dinner closer to home.
đ Animal Welfare & Traceability
All of our ingredients are sourced from farms that adhere to high UK animal welfare standards. We know where our food comes from â and weâre proud of it. Every McDug recipe is made with real meat, responsibly sourced, and gently cooked to preserve nutrients without wasteful or harmful processes.
âťď¸ Zero Waste Mindset
Our manufacturing process follows a âzero waste to landfillâ policy, meaning that every by-product is reused, recycled, or repurposed. Itâs another way we help keep the food bowl full without emptying the planet.
đ Shared Values = Better Dog Food
We didnât just choose our manufacturing partner because theyâre good at what they do â we chose them because they believe what we believe:
-
That great food starts with great ingredients
-
That caring for animals goes beyond the customerâs pet
-
And that doing the right thing is always worth it, even if it takes more effort
Weâre proud to bring you dog food made with care, compassion, and a clear conscience.
đŚ A Hawk with a Job to Do
Sustainability isnât just about solar panels and low-emission vans â sometimes, itâs about keeping things naturally balanced. To keep cheeky pigeons and seagulls from helping themselves to our tasty ingredients, we bring in a very special team member: a trained hawk! With a few swoops overhead, it gently encourages our feathery freeloaders to find lunch elsewhere. No chemicals, no traps â just nature doing its thing.
